The Division of Student Affairs is piloting a new Facilitation Training opportunity offered to U-M students to enhance their facilitation skills in a variety of contexts, whether facilitating meetings, group discussions, workshops, or other things. Even if you don’t do much facilitating right now, you will find an enhanced skillset valuable in the future, particularly if you will be in a professional context.
Facilitating well is an important leadership skill that will enable you to be effective in achieving your goals, whatever they may be. This training does not require or assume any previous facilitation experience whatsoever – it is designed to support a novice facilitator and also enhance the facilitation skill set of those with experience.
The training is divided into four modules:
The first module focuses on identifying and understanding self-identities, as well as systems of power, privilege and oppression.
The second module builds on this by exploring ways individuals can impact others through their interpersonal interactions and utilizing skill sets to facilitate inclusive spaces.
The third module provides participants with the opportunity to gain and enhance skills in facilitating large groups with an emphasis on identifying, assessing, and managing group dynamics.
The final module provides individuals with an opportunity to reflect on what they learned in the previous sessions and to practice managing various facilitation scenarios.
The training will be held March 22 & 23rd in Trotter Multicultural Center. It will be held on Friday, March 22nd from 2pm – 8pm and Saturday, March 23rd from 10am – 5pm. Please apply if you are interested and can commit to attending the entire training. Applications are due March 13, 2013 and applicants will be notified about their acceptance on March 15. If you apply and realize later that you are unable to attend the entire training, please let us know (by emailing DSAfacilitation@umich.edu) as soon as possible so that we can open up the opportunity for someone else. The training is compact and concentrated, with each module building and relying upon skills covered in the previous modules, so partial attendance would not yield effective skill-building.
To be considered for the training, please submit your completed application by March 13. We look forward to having you join us! If you have any questions, email the DSA Facilitation Committee at DSAfacilitation@umich.edu
